The Triological Society offers a series of named awards, one of which is an award for leadership. During the past 10 to 15 years, the society has had some remarkably talented leaders, but no one individual has dedicated more time, effort, and commitment to the Triological Society than Patrick E. Brookhouser, MD. His untimely passing led the society to create an award in his name, and the award is presented annually to a Triological Society member who demonstrates commitment to the society and to education and scholarship and embodies humility and humanity.

This year the Patrick E. Brookhouser Award of Excellence was presented to Frank E. Lucente, MD, professor and former chair of the department of otolaryngology at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in New York City. The inscription on the plaque read: “Frank E. Lucente, MD, who has made significant service and scientific contributions to the Triological Society and otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. The recipient embodies and perpetuates the ideals of the Triological Society and the leader, mentor, scholar, and clinician for whom this award is named, Patrick E. Brookhouser.

Dr. Lucente accepted the award, noting that the society "has always had strong leadership, but it is a society of leaders who are here.” He added, “We are involved in communities and we look for ways to serve those in need.”
