Triological Society Updates: Post-COSM Highlights and Upcoming Events

The post-COSM (Combined Otolaryngology Spring Meeting) period is traditionally a quiet time for the Triological Society, but not this year. Dana Thompson, MD, MS, MBA, and TRIO’s associate executive vice president, along with Gina Jefferson, MD, from the University of Mississippi, and other stalwart Triological Society members like Alan Micco, MD, TRIO’s president, recently spent a weekend with approximately 50 high school, college, and medical students with an interest in otolaryngology–head and neck surgery in Chicago. Presentations and skills labs were on the menu. By all accounts, the event was extremely successful, and part of our Inclusive Excellence program designed to introduce people interested in medicine to our field and create mentorship connections. We even had a commemorative T-shirt to give out. You will be hearing more about this initiative at our upcoming Combined Sections Meeting in Orlando on January 22-24, 2026.

Reena Patil, MD, MBA, chairs the Program Committee for the Combined Sections meeting, and content for the meeting is developing well. Registration for the meeting starts on October 1, so please plan to join us. It will be fun to celebrate our vice presidents, Natasha Mirza, MD, from the Eastern Section, Craig Buchman, MD, from the Middle Section, Earl Harley, MD, from the Southern Section, and Dinesh Chhetri, MD, from the Western Section.

Jeffrey Simons, MD, MMM (our CME coordinator), has scheduled the next Beyond the Otoscope Webinar on the Aging Otolaryngologist, taking place on Tuesday, November 18, with our guest panel consisting of Jonas Johnson, MD, Earl Harley, MD, Stacey Gray, MD, and Roger Crumley, MD, along with our moderator, Robert Sataloff, MD. Please mark your calendars.

On the publishing side, congratulations to editor Robin Lindsay, MD, and our Wiley publishing partner Lisa Casinger. ENTtoday won two APEX Awards for Excellence, one for the August 2024 issue and one for the October 2024 issue. I think that ENTtoday is probably the most widely read publication domestically in our field. Way to go, Robin! And speaking of publishing, I want to take a moment to thank all our TRIO members who volunteer their time to review articles for our journals. It can be time-consuming, but also very rewarding. Your service to our publications, The Laryngoscope and Laryngoscope Investigative Otolaryngology, is highly appreciated, especially by our magnificent editors, Sam Selesnick, MD, and Romaine Johnson, MD, MPH.

Brad Goldstein, MD, PhD, will be busy this fall and winter with new grant applications, and I believe the Society will be in a solid position to support new careers and new research, which we will determine when we meet in 2026. Finally, it is that time of year when thesis submissions start rolling in. Dan Deschler, MD, and his Thesis Committee will embark upon their rigorous process to review the submissions of the incoming class of 2026. Looking forward to seeing you in Orlando!
