Boston Skyline

The Combined Otolaryngology Spring Meetings’ (COSM) mission is to bring together the members of the various COSM societies, otolaryngology residents, medical students, and allied health professionals to see the latest cutting-edge clinical and basic scientific research.

Whether or not you’ve booked your trip yet, you may want to check out a few of these sessions that piqued the interest of ENTtoday Physician Editor Robin Lindsay, MD.

Triological Society Panels

There are several interesting panel discussions at this year’s COSM.

Office-Based Rhinologic Procedures in the Era of Scarce OR Time

Moderator: Eric Wang, MD

Panelists: Amber Luong, MD, Peter Hwang, MD, Brian Rotenberg, MD

Office-based rhinologic procedures have become even more popular (e.g. turbinoplasties, polypectomies, balloon sinus dilation, etc.), particularly in recent years with staffing shortages curtailing operating room time.

Perioperative Management of OSA

Moderator: Stacey Ishman, MD

Panelists: Colin Huntley, MD, Maria Suurna, MD, Dane Grenda, DO

Obstructive sleep apnea increases perioperative complication risk; airway management issues need to be anticipated and managed to minimize postoperative morbidity and mortality.

Value-Based Payments: Preparing for CMS Engagement as a Specialty

Moderator: Will Harrill, MD

Value-based reimbursement has been embraced by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, which hopes to move 50% of all Medicare reimbursement to alternative payment models by 2023 and eliminate fee-for-service arrangements by 2025.

Approach to the Difficult Airway: What’s in the Toolbox?

Moderator: Karen Kost, MD

Panelists: Alexander Hillel, MD, Karla O’Dell, MD, Alexander Gelbard, MD

This discussion of vital resources for any clinician involved in airway management can help deal with patients who have expected or unexpected difficult airways.
