It is with genuine excitement that we introduce the TRIO Leadership Academy, a new initiative developed by the Triological Society to support the continued growth of leaders within otolaryngology. Our specialty has long been defined by excellence in patient care, innovation in research, and dedication to education. As the healthcare landscape evolves, so too must the skills required to lead effectively within it.

Today’s clinical leaders are asked to navigate an increasingly complex environment. Beyond clinical responsibilities, many find themselves engaged in strategic planning, resource stewardship, faculty development, and institutional collaboration. These expanding roles require not only expertise in the art of otolaryngology but also a thoughtful approach to leadership, communication, and decision making. Recognizing this need, the TRIO Leadership Academy has been designed to provide Society members with a structured opportunity to reflect, learn, and create impact.

This course draws inspiration from established leadership programs while remaining tailored to the unique challenges and opportunities within otolaryngology. At its core, this course seeks to strengthen participants’ ability to lead with clarity and purpose. Through a carefully designed curriculum, participants will explore the multifaceted responsibilities of clinical leadership, from aligning practice and departmental goals with broader institutional priorities to navigating change in times of uncertainty.

A distinguishing feature of the TRIO Leadership Academy is its emphasis on interactive, case-based learning. Participants will engage in real-world scenarios that mirror the kinds of decisions faced by leaders in both academic and private practice settings. These cases are intended not to provide simple answers, but to encourage thoughtful analysis, discussion, and reflection. By examining complex situations from multiple perspectives, participants will develop a deeper understanding of how to approach challenging decisions with confidence and insight.

Equally important is the collaborative environment the Academy fosters. Leadership can at times feel isolating, but it is strengthened through shared experience. By bringing together members from across our specialty, the course creates space for meaningful dialogue, peer learning, and mentorship. Informal conversations often become as impactful as formal sessions, offering practical wisdom and new perspectives that extend well beyond the classroom.

The curriculum also addresses essential management principles that are increasingly relevant in clinical practice. Topics such as financial stewardship, organizational dynamics, and strategic thinking are introduced in an accessible and practical manner. In addition, participants will receive guidance on preparing for leadership roles, including insights into pursuing positions such as practice management, chief of staff, hospital and health system leadership roles, academic division chief, or department chair.
