Triological Society Presents Otolaryngology Awards at 2014 Combined Sections Meeting

H. Bryan Neel III, MD, PhD, Honored with Second Annual Patrick E. Brookhouser, MD, Award for Excellence

This award was established in memory of Dr. Brookhouser, a past president and long-standing executive secretary of the Triological Society. The certificate bestowed reads:

The Triological Society is proud to present The Patrick E. Brookhouser, MD Award for Excellence to H. Bryan Neel III, MD, PhD, who has made significant service and scientific contributions to the Triological Society and otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. The recipient embodies and perpetuates the ideals of the Triological Society and the leader, mentor, scholar and clinician for whom this award is named.

Dr. Neel has served in leadership positions for many organizations and has given generously of his time and talents to the Triological Society since 1992. Dr. Neel, a past president of the society, continues to serve as a member of the council and as historian. Dr. Neel guided the Mayo Clinic Department of Otolaryngology to national prominence while publishing more than 230 papers and chapters. He is chairman emeritus in the department of otolaryngology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and regent emeritus at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Neel is the embodiment of excellence, which is what this award recognizes.

Samir S. Khariwala, MD, Received Seventh Annual George L. Adams, MD, Young Faculty Award

Established in 2007, this award is given annually to a young academic otolaryngologist from the Middle Section who is chosen by a committee of peers and department chairs. Dr. Khariwala is an assistant professor of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at the University of Minnesota. His certificate reads, in part:

This honor was created to perpetuate the ideals of the great clinician, teacher and mentor for whom it was named and to bestow upon a worthy recipient the responsibility of furthering the highest standards of perfection in the study, teaching and practice of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery.

Dr. Khariwala embodies the ideals of Dr. Adams as a clinician, surgeon, and scientist, serving as a role model to students and residents. Known as a technically gifted microvascular surgeon, Dr. Khariwala’s commitment to a scientific career has been rewarded with numerous foundation grants and a National Institutes of Health career development award. Like Dr. Adams, he possesses the virtues of kindness, honesty, and commitment, along with numerous other characteristics that made Dr. Adams so admired and successful.

Resident Research Awards

Ten Resident Research Awards were given in the names of the Triological Society’s notable teachers, surgeons, and researchers. Residents were selected to receive the competitive Resident Research Awards based on manuscripts submitted to the program liaisons from the four sections of the society. The awardees presented their award-winning papers as podium or poster presentations at the January meeting. All awardees received a cash prize for their papers.

Poster Awards

An important part of the Triological Society meetings are the poster sessions and the “Meet the Authors” poster receptions, which give attendees the opportunity to discuss the research and clinical posters with the authors. Posters were judged in several categories by program committee members during the poster session. Nine poster authors, out of 112 posters, were recognized for their outstanding work. The prize-winning posters were designated with award ribbons during the poster reception, and the authors received cash awards.

Resident Travel Awards

Awards in the amount of $750 for each Triological Society resident member chosen to present a podium or poster presentation were presented to 28 academic departments. Fifty-two residents qualified for these grants to help offset travel expenses incurred to attend and present at the Combined Sections Meeting in January. Resident Travel Awards are given annually for the winter meetings.
